European Commission launches training for Palestinian customs officers at Rafah
JERUSALEM, April 29, 2007, (WAFA)- The European Commission launched Sunday its first training programme for Palestinian customs officers at the Rafah crossing.
The Palestinian customs department has identified 40 officers for this initial training programme.
"It is vital for the Palestinian people and the economy that the Rafah border functions, as provided for under the Agreement on Movement and Access," Mr. John Kjaer, head of the European Commission Technical Assistance Office said.
"Through this training programme, the European Union is helping to build the capacity of the customs staff to carry out their duties at Rafah," he added.
Training will be provided to 10 officers at any one time to ensure the full availability of other staff for normal work at the crossing. The courses will run until late June, European Commission office in Jerusalem said in a statement.
The training is being led by a former senior member of the British customs service who worked extensively in Northern Ireland.
