Abu-Amr: Palestine Sticks to Arab Summit Resolutions
CAIRO, April 19, 2007 (WAFA ) - Foreign Minister Zyad Abu-Amr reasserted commitment to the resolutions of Arab Summit, held late March in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as well as the recommendations of the committee on Arab peace initiative.
The Palestinian side backs the recommendation on the mechanism for dialogue with the United States, he told reporters after meeting Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul-Gheit Thursday.
The mechanism is a ministerial Arab committee charged with contacting major world players including the International Quartet on the Middle East, the UN Security Council and the United States.
Another work team was also formed by the committee on Arab peace initiative to hold contacts with Israel, Abu-Amr noted.
As for the issue of Palestinian-Israeli prisoners' swap, the Palestinian minister said Egypt was following up the file in details and he would meet Egyptian intelligence chief Omar Sulaiman on the issue soon.
The Arab summit identified a mechanism for contacts with the Israeli side as the issue is not a mere Palestinian affair, according to Abu-Amr.
He voiced hope that the international community would respond positively to the Palestinian moves to lift the political and economic embargoes on the Palestinian government and apply pressures on the Israeli side to accept the Arab peace initiative.
Only when Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert agrees to the initiative, new prospects for peace will appear in the Middle East, the FM minister asserted.
