Newspapers Review: Israeli demolition of a house near Ramallah, corona focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Tuesday, May 12, 2020 (WAFA) – Israel’s demolition of a Palestinian house in the village of Kobar and the Minister of Health announcing no new cases of coronavirus in Palestine were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.

They said that the Israeli army demolished the family home of Qassam Barghouti in Kobar after accusing him of taking part in the killing of an Israeli settler last year.

They also said that Palestine remained clear of new corona cases in the last four days with al-Quds quoting the Palestinian Minister of Health saying “we should not relax,” while, according to al-Ayyam, 16 patients have recovered.

Al-Ayyam said the Israeli army issued stop work orders on Palestinian structures and detained eight Palestinians in the West Bank.

It said Rafah crossing with Egypt is going to reopen today to allow entry of 1000 Palestinians into the Gaza Strip.

It said France is calling for a strong response to Israeli annexation of occupied Palestinian territory.

Al-Quds said Israel extended the closure order and ban against Palestine TV office and work in occupied East Jerusalem for six more months.

It quoted the head of the Islamic Waqf in Jerusalem, Azzam Khatib, explaining the reason for keeping Al-Aqsa Mosque closed to worshippers in Ramadan is that it will be impossible to organize the tens of thousands of worshippers and that the Waqf does not want the Mosque to be the source for the spread of coronavirus disease.

It said members of the US Congress are threatening action against Jordan if it does not turn over to it Ahlam Tamimi, a Palestinian it is holding.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said in its top front page story that President Mahmoud Abbas has called the governors and the heads of the security forces and instructed them to continue with their efforts to contain the coronavirus disease.

It also quoted Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh saying in the cabinet that sanctions should be imposed on Israel if it proceeds with plans to annex parts of the occupied West Bank.

It said Britain will not support the Israeli annexation.
