Emergency Arab League meeting on Thursday to address Al-Aqsa crisis and prisoners’ death penalty

CAIRO, March 31, 2026 (WAFA) – Palestine’s Permanent Representative to the Arab League, Ambassador Muhannad Al-Aklouk, announced that an extraordinary session of the League’s Council at the level of permanent representatives will be held on Thursday at the request of Palestine and with the support of member states.

In a statement to WAFA, Al-Aklouk said the unanimously backed meeting will discuss measures to confront Israeli crimes and violations in occupied Jerusalem and its Islamic and Christian holy sites, in addition to the approval by the Israeli Knesset of a discriminatory and invalid law permitting the execution of Palestinian prisoners.

The Palestinian envoy emphasized that ending the Israeli occupation of the land of the Palestinian state, with Jerusalem as its capital, removing its effects, holding perpetrators accountable, and stopping Israel’s threat to Arab national security, is the only way to resolve the Arab–Israeli conflict and establish peace, security, and stability in the region.

He added that the meeting was requested in light of the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people, systematic Israeli violations in occupied Jerusalem, assaults on its Islamic and Christian holy sites, restrictions on freedom of worship, continued closure of the Al-Aqsa Mosque for more than 30 days, and impediments to access and religious practices at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

Al-Aklouk also warned of the serious consequences of the Israeli Knesset’s adoption of a discriminatory law authorizing the execution of Palestinian prisoners, describing it as a fully constituted war crime and a blatant violation of international humanitarian law and all relevant international conventions protecting prisoners and human rights.

He called for immediate action to halt the law, prevent its implementation, hold Israel accountable for its continuous violations, and impose sanctions for its clear breach of international law.
