Four European countries urge Israel to abandon death penalty law for Palestinian Prisoners

RAMALLAH, March 31, 2026 (WAFA) – Four European countries have called on Israel to abandon a proposed law imposing the death penalty on Palestinian prisoners, expressing deep concern over its serious consequences.

In a joint statement issued Monday, the countries, United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Italy, expressing grave concern over the approval of the draft legislation by the National Security Committee in the Knesset.

The statement said that "the draft law would significantly increase the likelihood of the death penalty being implemented in Israel," stressing that this punishment is an "inhumane and degrading" form of punishment and has no deterrent effect.

"We oppose the death penalty wherever it exists and under any circumstances," the statement said, calling on decision-makers in the Knesset and the Israeli government to abandon these plans.
