Newspapers Review: Speeches by President Abbas and the Prime Minister focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, Wednesday, May 6, 2020 (WAFA) – Speeches by President Mahmoud Abbas to Fatah Central Committee and another one by Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh regarding the latest government measures related to combating coronavirus pandemic were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam led with the remarks by President Abbas in which he stressed concern for the lives of the Palestinian people in time of coronavirus.

The third daily, al-Quds, highlighted Shtayyeh’s remarks in which he announced easing of restrictions imposed since the outbreak of coronavirus.

Corona cases in Palestine and around the world were also highlighted on the front page of the three dailies, but mainly al-Quds.

They said 11 new corona cases were confirmed in the West Bank and East Jerusalem yesterday.

Al-Quds said in a report quoting officials that Israel wants to end official Palestinian presence in occupied East Jerusalem as court remands a local leader detained yesterday along with other top Palestinian activists in the city.

It said that the European Union contributed 38 million euros toward salaries of Palestinian public employees.

The paper also said fanatic Jewish groups have asked the Israeli High Court to order reopening Al-Aqsa Mosque for them. The mosque was closed to all, even Muslim worshippers, due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Al-Ayyam quoted the Islamic Waqf, which is in charge of Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, saying that the mosque will not reopen until the reason for closing it is over.

It also quoted the United Nations Palestine refugee agency, UNRWA, saying that it is operating on a monthly bases and it is facing its worst ever financial crisis.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the French development agency contributed three million euros to help the Palestinians fight coronavirus.
