Newspaper Review: New coronavirus cases among Palestinians at home and in diaspora

RAMALLAH, Wednesday, April 15, 2020 (WAFA) –The new coronavirus cases in Palestine and in the diaspora were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said 19 cases were confirmed in Palestine yesterday, including five in occupied East Jerusalem.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said 13 cases were confirmed in the West Bank, and said also that 31 diaspora Palestinians have died from corona around the world.

The paper also said that Palestinians in occupied Jerusalem were shocked by the large number of cases in the city.

It said in a headline that President Mahmoud Abbas issued instructions to adhere to the emergency rules and to take legal action against violators.

Al-Quds gave a breakdown of the corona cases in Israel and the world and said the Israeli government will look tomorrow into a plan to gradually get out of the lockdown.

The paper said 22 organizations have called on the world to prevent Israel’s annexation of occupied Palestinian land.

It quoted Israeli settlements expert Khalil Toufakji saying that Israel is taking advantage of the corona outbreak to implement strategic settlement projects.

It also said Israeli forces raided a corona-testing center in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan and detained those running it claiming the Palestinian Authority has helped in setting it up.

The paper said Palestinians in Israel are the most vulnerable for the infection because of the government discriminatory policy against them in infrastructure and health.

Al-Quds also said Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti has completed 18 years in Israeli jails.

Al-Ayyam discussed the benefits and drawbacks of the easing in the restrictions in the West Bank declared by the prime minister two days ago.

It said Israeli settlers attacked Palestinians and set cars on fire a West Bank village, as well as chopped olive trees.
