Newspapers Review: One coronavirus death, four new cases in West Bank focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, Saturday, April 11, 2020 (WAFA) – One death as a result of coronavirus and four new cases in the West Bank were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.

The papers printed a picture of medical staff at the Ramallah-area hospital giving the farewell prayer for the 55-year-old corona victim from the northern West Bank city of Tulkarm, the second so far in Palestine. They said the four new cases were in different parts of already infected areas in the West Bank, raising total of corona cases in Palestine to 267.

The telephone calls President Mahmoud Abbas made to a number of Arab leaders and local officials yesterday were also highlighted on the front page of the dailies, particularly al-Hayat al-Jadida.

It said in a report from Jerusalem that the city’s Palestinian residents have to worry about getting hold of face masks and cloves, which are rare, in light of Israel’s orders to have everyone wear them if they are out or get fined, in addition to their worry about the bad economic conditions and neglect with the corona pandemic.

The quiet Good Friday events in Jerusalem yesterday as a result of restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic was also highlighted on the front page of the dailies with al-Ayyam printing a picture of the closed doors of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem’s old city, the site of the crucifixion and burial of Jesus Christ, the final destination and prayer services of the Good Friday procession.

Al-Ayyam said the Friday prayer at Al-Aqsa Mosque for Muslims was also suspended for the third Friday in a row.

It said a 4.1 tremor hit the Dead Sea area yesterday and was felt in the south of the country and in Jordan.

Al-Quds said Israel closed entrances to a village in the south of the West Bank and attacked Palestinians in another village in the north causing suffocation cases.

It said Israeli settlers are also taking part in attacking Palestinians who are confined to their homes due to the coronavirus outbreak.

It said Israel has also approved the construction of 1300 housing units in the illegal settlement of Gilo, south of Jerusalem.
