Newspapers Review: Coronavirus remains the main front-page story in the Palestinian dailies

RAMALLAH, Wednesday, April 1, 2020 (WAFA) – As expected, the coronavirus pandemic and its impact on life in Palestine and the world remained as the main front-page story in the three Palestinian Arabic dailies today.

All the papers highlighted either the new cases confirmed in the West Bank and Gaza very early yesterday, as reported by al-Ayyam and al-Quds dailies, or the fact that no new cases were reported all day yesterday, as was the main headline in al-Hayat al-Jadida.

Al-Quds said Israeli police detained Palestinian volunteers and confiscated food parcels prepared by local neighborhood committees in occupied East Jerusalem to help residents stuck in their homes.

It said a new poll showed more than 80 percent approval of the performance of the Palestinian government in the time of corona.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida also highlighted a call by Palestinian official, Saeb Erekat, calling to save the 5000 plus Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails from the coronavirus disease, as a petition to the same effect is being circulated.

It also reported on the Israeli army incursion into Ramallah yesterday and terrorizing people in the neighborhood while raiding and causing heavy destruction to the home of a Palestinian lawyer detained in the raid.

It reported from the Jordan River crossing on the arrival to the West Bank of a couple of hundred Palestinians who were held in Jordan for two weeks as a precaution against coronavirus.

It also said Royal Industries company in the southern West Bank city of Hebron is in the process of building its first respiratory device.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted Jenin governor Akram Rjoub saying that is no sign of crime committed in the burning to death of a 15-year-old boy in the northern West Bank city.

Al-Ayyam said the Israeli army continued to demolish Palestinian buildings, close roads, detain people as settlers also go on a rampage in some areas of the occupied territories despite the coronavirus developments.

It said the Israeli army has ordered closed the Ibrahimi Mosque in the southern West Bank city of Hebron as Palestinians warn of Israeli intentions to take over the entire mosque and turn it into a Jewish worship area while taking advantage of the coronavirus closures.
