RAMALLAH, Saturday, March 09, 2019 (WAFA) – The Israeli army killing yesterday of a 23-year-old man during the March of Return protests on the Gaza border with Israel and injury of at least 45 others, including women, children and medics, was highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies today.
The papers said dozens were also injured in the weekly Friday protests in the West Bank, particularly in the village of Beit Sira which recently lost a son who was shot and killed by the Israeli army along with another Palestinian in apparent cold blood.
In other news, the dailies highlighted condemnation for the shooting at a senior Fatah member in Gaza. They said President Mahmoud Abbas and other officials have condemned the attempt at the life of Ahmad Hillis, member of Fatah Central Council.
Al-Ayyam said Israel turned over the corpse of Samah Mubarak to her family in Ramallah after holding her body for 66 days. Mubarak was shot dead near Zayyem military checkpoint east of Jerusalem for an alleged stabbing attack on January 30.
It also said an Egyptian security delegation working on bringing calm between Gaza and Israel has reached an agreement to resume stage one of the calm understanding between them.
Al-Quds also reported on this topic and quoted Talal Abu Tharifa, senior member of the Democratic Front for the Liberation Of Palestine, saying that Israel has agreed to stop shooting at Palestinians who do not pose any threat to its soldiers during the March of \Return protests and allow money and fuel in to run the power generators to increase availability of electricity for 12 hours a day. He said this will be applied gradually.
Al-Quds also quoted the French news agency, AFP, saying that Fatah has decided to name Central Committee member Mohammad Shtayyeh to form the new Palestinian government. It said all members of the Central Committee have supported the nomination of Shtayyeh to that post and that President Abbas is expected to entrust him with this task in the coming days.
The newspaper also reported on the Friday prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem’s Old City and said tens of thousands of people have attended the prayers at Bab al-Rahma site inside al-Aqsa holy compound despite heavy and strict Israeli police measures.
It published an interview with Olivier Adam, head of the United Nations Volunteers program, who said that volunteering in Palestine supports steadfastness and raises hopes.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida said South Africa intends to downgrade ties with Israel and openly supports Palestine.
It also reported on the International Women’s Day and said women in Gaza are struggling to have a normal life.
