RAMALLAH, Tuesday, February 26, 2019 (WAFA) – Calls by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to re-close Bab al-Rahma gate inside Al-Aqsa Mosque compound for Muslim worship was highlighted on the front page of the Palestinian Arabic dailies today.
Al-Quds described the decision as “a new escalation,” while al-Ayyam said Netanyahu wants to start an open confrontation against the Muslim Waqf, which is in charge of Al-Aqsa compound.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida allotted almost its entire front page to the rallies in support of President Mahmoud Abbas and against Hamas’ calls for his departure. It printed a picture across the front page of the masses coming out in Nablus in support of Abbas. Al-Ayyam also reported on these rallies.
The Arab-European summit held in Sharm el-Sheikh sea resort in Egypt was also highlighted on the front page of the three dailies, focusing on its final declaration in which it stressed the two-state solution, preserving the pre-1967 status quo in occupied Jerusalem and sustaining the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
Al-Ayyam said in its report on the summit that the European Union and the Arab League have announced a new era in their relationship despite differences.
Revelations about the American deal of the century by Jared Kushner, son-in-law and senior advisor to the US president, were also reported on the front page of al-Quds and al-Ayyam with the former saying the political part of the deal concentrates on borders and the final status.
They also reported on the daily Israeli military measures in the occupied territories, particularly the military exercises in the north of the West Bank and the land-grab by the settlers.
The night protests on the Gaza border with Israel were also covered in which three Palestinians were injured by Israeli army gunfire.
Al-Ayyam said Hamas has condemned Libya’s sentencing of four Palestinians affiliated with the movement.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on the 25th anniversary for the Ibrahimi Mosque massacre in Hebron when a Jewish terrorist murdered 29 Palestinians while performing morning prayers.
