Newspapers Review: Tax money, Gaza injuries and family expulsion focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Monday, February 18, 2019 (WAFA) – The Israeli decision to deducted millions of dollars from the Palestinian tax revenues, the night clashes between Palestinians and Israeli soldiers at the Gaza border with Israel that left 19 people injured and Israel’s expulsion of a Palestinian family from its home in Jerusalem’s Old City for the benefit of settlers were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies today.

Al-Ayyam said in its main front page story on the money issue that Israel “steals” $138 million of Palestinian tax revenues under the pretext of prisoners’ allowances.

Al-Quds described it as “piracy”, as came in the official statement from Nabil Abu Rudeineh, the spokesman of President Mahmoud Abbas, while al-Hayat al-Jadida quoting Abu Rudeineh saying in the same statement that the Palestinian leadership will not allow anything to affect these allowances considered vital for the livelihood of the families.

On the Gaza border protests, the three dailies said 19 Palestinians were injured when Israeli soldiers opened fire at the protesters in the northern borders of the besieged Gaza Strip.

They also highlighted Israeli police expulsion by force of the Abu Assab family from its home in the Muslim Quarter in the Old City of the Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem in order to turn it over to Jewish settlers.

The three papers printed pictures of the afflicted Palestinian family and its home after its takeover by the settlers.

Al-Ayyam said 10 residents of the house, including three children, were assaulted and removed by force from the house after which 10 settlers broke into the house and occupied it. It said the settlers raised the Israeli flag on the roof of the house that overlooks Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The paper said in another story that the Palestinian presidency rejected accusation of interfering in internal Israeli affairs.

It quoted Saeb Erekat, secretary general of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) accusing the United States and Israel of scheming to destroy the Palestinian Authority.

Al-Quds said Israel has installed cameras and voice detectors in the vicinity of Al-Aqsa Mosque and in Jerusalem’s Old City. It said Israel is planning a huge settlement project inside the Old City.

It also said prayers were held in the Holy Sepulcher Church in Jerusalem in remembrance of the massacre of the Ibrahimi Mosque.

It also reported on the Arab List that is running in the Israeli elections saying there is still a chance of the Arabs running in one list.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Hamas prevented Palestinian Authority employees from reaching Karm Abu Salem/Kerem Shalom commercial crossing in the south of the Gaza Strip.

It also quoted Fatah Central Committee member Azzam al-Ahmad saying Hamas has thwarted the Moscow talks between the Palestinian factions.
