Arab League chief condemns Israeli excessive use of force against Palestinians in Jerusalem

CAIRO, July 21, 2017 (WAFA)- The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit condemned on Friday Israel‘s use of excessive force and live bullets against unarmed Palestinians in occupied Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque, killing and injuring a number of them.

The spokesman for the Secretary-General, Mahmoud Afifi, said that Aboul Gheit believes that the current tension opens the door for further escalation in general amid growing anger of the Palestinian, Arab and Islamic people due to the Israeli violence and the actions initiated by the Israeli authorities since last Friday including restrictions on the right of Muslims to practice their religious rites and pray in Al-Aqsa Mosque.

He also referred to the Israeli measures that aim at changing the status quo in the occupied city of Jerusalem and in the Old City area, which will only fuel anger in the Arab and Islamic world.

The spokesman added that the Secretary-General renewed his call on the Israeli authorities to immediately cease all actions that open the door to further escalation of the situation.

He demanded all the actors of the international community to shoulder their responsibilities in this regard and urge Israel to stop its practices and respect the international resolutions related to the status of Jerusalem, as well as the relevant norms of international law and international human rights law.

Israelis shot dead three Palestinians and wounded hundreds others on Friday in a day of rage called for in support of Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem and in protest against new Israeli measures at the Muslim holy site.
