WASHINGTON, July 1, 2017 (WAFA) – Saeb Erekat, secretary general of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization, said Saturday that he met in Washington with special US peace envoy Jason Greenblatt.
While Erekat gave no details about the meeting, it nevertheless took place shortly after Greenblatt and Jared Kushner, senior adviser to US President Donald Trump and his son-in-law, had visited the Middle East and met Palestinian and Israeli leaders in an effort to revive the deadlocked peace process.
US officials had said then that further talks were going to be held with Palestinian and Israeli teams in Washington and in the region.
Erekat also confirmed that UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres is going to visit the region in August to work on reviving the peace process.
He said Guterres told him in a telephone call that he is fully committed to working toward the two-state solution and that he intends to visit the region in August to pursue that goal.
Erekat was in New York on Thursday where he addressed the United Nations on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
