Newspapers review: President’s meeting with White House’s top aides focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, June 22, 2017 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas’ meeting with US President Donald Trump’s senior advisor Jared Kushner and envoy Jason Greenblatt in Ramallah hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.

Al-Quds reported Abbas discussed final-status issues with Trump’s envoys, Kushner and Greenblatt.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam added Abbas affirmed his commitment to the two-state solution and stressed the need to create an independent State of Palestine with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on the 1967 borders.

Al-Ayyam also reported the White House underscoring that forging peace would take time.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Palestinian President’s spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudenieh announcing during the meeting, Abbas clearly and accurately discussed all final status issues.

On the other hand, al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has instructed the Municipality of West Jerusalem to approve the construction of over 7,000 new settler’s units in East Jerusalem.

The dailies also reported a total of 300,000 Muslim worshippers performed prayers on Laylat al-Qadr in East Jerusalem’s flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

Al-Quds reported Israeli forces conducted multiple raids in the southern West Bank district of Bethlehem, sparking clashes with Palestinian residents.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said Israeli bulldozers continued for the second day in a row leveling Palestinian land in the village of Jalud in order to make way for a new settlement to the south of Nablus.

 Al-Hayat al-Jadida added Israeli troops detained 20 Palestinians as they conducted multiple overnight raids across the West Bank.

It noted among the detainees was Zeinab, the mother of Adel Ankoush, 18, one of the three Palestinians who shot dead an Israeli policewoman near East Jerusalem’s Damascus Gate about a week ago.

Al-Quds reported Israeli occupation authorities ordered several Palestinian social, cultural and educational institutions operating in East Jerusalem to close their bank accounts.

It reported Chairman of the Committee for Prisoners’ Affairs Issa Qaraqe affirming caring for the families of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails besides to others shot dead and injured by Israeli forces is a part of the Palestinian Basic Law.

Qaraqe made these remarks to assure Palestinians that the Palestinian Authority (PA) would continue to pay the allowances of the martyrs and prisoners.

Al-Ayyam said Israel was procrastinating in handing over the bodies of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces and settlers, considering them as a bargaining chip.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Palestinian Finance Minister Shukri Bishara announcing a US federal court has dropped a case against the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the PA.

Finally, al-Ayyam said Egypt has allowed diesel to enter the besieged Gaza Strip through the Rafah crossing for the enclave’s sole power plant.
