RAMALLAH, November 1, 2016 (WAFA) – The Israeli army killing of a Palestinian policeman after who allegedly opened fire at army checkpoint near Ramallah and injured three Israeli soldiers before he was shot and killed was highlighted on the front page headlines in the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Tuesday.
The three dailies said the incident took place near the settlement of Beit El, at the northern entrance of Ramallah. The alleged attacker was identified as 25-year-old Muhammad Turkman, from the Jenin area town of Qabatiya.
Highlighting Israeli reprisals, al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israeli military declared Ramallah a closed military zone.
The dailies said Israeli bulldozers demolished residential and agricultural structures and seized tractors belonging to Palestinian farmers and shepherds in the northern Jordan Valley locality of Khirbet al-Deir.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida added Israeli troops raided a middle school in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan reportedly attempting to detain students accused of hurling stones.
Highlighting detentions, al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israeli forces detained a total of 22 Palestinians in overnight West Bank raids.
Furthermore, al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida spotlighted Italian President Sergio Mattarella’s visit to Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories.
Quoting statements by Mattarella during a press conference with his Israeli counterpart Reuven Revilin, they papers said he expressed concern that the stalemate in the peace talks would seriously threaten the two-state solution.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida said President Mahmoud Abbas is scheduled to meet Mattarella in Bethlehem on Tuesday.
Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida covered an Israeli researcher’s remarks on the drastic situation in the blockaded Gaza Strip.
They reported the Israeli Legal Center for Freedom of Movement’s (Gisha) researcher, Elizabeth Tsurkov, as stating the situation in Gaza is very serious and Israeli decision makers are aware about this.
The three dailies covered senior Israeli officials’ calls for the annexation of the Israeli settlement of Ma’ale Adumim, east of Jerusalem.
Israeli premier Benjamin Netanyahu was reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam as bragging that Israel would not withdraw to pre-1967 borders.
Highlighting Palestinian official response to the settlement annexation, al-Ayyam reported Jerusalem governor Adnan Husseini as stating Israel seeks to turn the West Bank into isolated cantons.
On the 99th occasion of Britain’s Balfour Declaration, al-Quds reported Palestinian officials urged Britain to recognize its historical and legal responsibility for inflicting suffering upon the Palestinian people.
Regionally, the dailies said Michel Aoun was elected as Lebanon’s president
Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said secretary-general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation Iyad Madani resigned for “health reasons.”
