RAMALLAH, October 17, 2016 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies highlighted in their Monday issue attacks by Israeli settlers against olive farmers in the West Bank.
The papers said that while settlers were intensifying their attacks against farmers in this year’s olive harvest season, soldiers were busy raiding Palestinian villages and towns and arresting people, some of them were minors.
Al-Quds said Jewish fanatics have stormed Al Aqsa Mosque and called on Jews to intensify their presence in the Muslim holy place during the Jewish holidays.
It said police arrested a mosque guard and 11 other people from Jerusalem’s Old City.
Al-Ayyam said Israel released Eman, the 17-year-old daughter of Misbah Abu Sbeih, after holding her for one week. Abu Sbeih shot and killed two Israelis, including a police officer, in Jerusalem on October 9. Three of his children were detained and his family business was welded shut.
The paper included an interview with Foreign Minister Riyad Malki in which he expressed hope that a United Nations Security Council session on the Middle East on Wednesday would push forward Palestine’s drive to get a Security Council resolution against Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.
The paper also highlighted the death of an infant in an uncertified nursery in Kufr Aqab, an East Jerusalem neighborhood, as well as the death of two people when their car fell into a ditch in Wadi Bathan in the north of the West Bank.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida also reported on this story but its main front page story dealt with a conference held in Cairo which was condemned by Fatah as an attempt to undermine the authority of President Mahmoud Abbas as head of the movement.
The paper quoted one Fatah official in Gaza as describing the conference as “the Dahlan conference” in reference to former Fatah strongman Mohammad Dahlan who was dismissed from the movement.
The same paper also quoted Azzam Ahmad, member of Fatah Central Committee, saying that Hamas did not abide by the national consensus government and continues to rule in Gaza.
Al-Quds and al-Ayyam printed photos on their front page of Palestinians at Rafah border point with Egypt in the south of the Gaza Strip waiting to leave the Strip.
Al-Ayyam printed a photo of families of Palestinians killed by Israeli soldiers in Hebron demanding that Israel release their bodies to be buried at home.
