Newspapers review: Killing Palestinian youth in Silwan raid focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, October 12, 2016 (WAFA) – The killing of a 20—year-old Palestinian man by Israeli troops in the Jerusalem town of Silwan hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.

The dailies said a Palestinian young man was shot dead by Israeli troops during a raid into the Jerusalem town of Silwan.

The slain Palestinian, identified as Ali Shiokhi, reportedly was shot by a live round in his pelvis and left to bleed to death.

The dailies reported several Palestinians were shot and injured by Israeli troops during clashes in the Jerusalem town of al-Ram.

The dailies also said several other Palestinians were shot and injured by Israeli troops during clashes near Bilal Ibn Rabah Mosque, also known as Rachel’s Tomb, at the northern entrance of Bethlehem city.

Highlighting Israeli punitive measures, al-Quds and al-Ayyam said Israeli forces shot down shops belonging to the family of Misbah Abu Sbeih in the Jerusalem town of al-Ram.

It is worth noting that Abu Sbeih, 39, was killed on Sunday by Israeli police after he killed two Israelis and injured seven others in a drive-by shooting near the Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah.

The dailies said Israeli forces demolished the Nablus family home of a Palestinian Israel claimed was an accomplice in the killing of two Israeli settlers in October 2015.

The decisions taken by the Palestinian cabinet during weekly session in Ramallah also hit front page headlines in the dailies.

Al-Quds said the cabinet supported President Mahmoud Abbas’ efforts to push for a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution condemning Israeli settlement construction across the West Bank.

It added the cabinet called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to open an investigation into Israeli assaults against the Palestinian people.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida added the cabinet decided that all municipal councils in the West Bank and Gaza who have resigned to run for elections originally planned for October 8 can continue in their work as usual.

Highlighting the situation in flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, al-Quds said Jewish settlers forced their way into and performed religious rituals at the mosque compound.

Al-Ayyam said a total of 156 settlers stormed the mosque compound and others attacked Palestinians in Jerusalem’s Old City.

Moreover, al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted Israeli general closure on the West Bank and Gaza during the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur and tightened restrictions inside Jerusalem in its main front page news article.

It said Israeli occupation forces turned Jerusalem into a military barrack and targeted Orphan Islamic School, known as Dar al-Aytam.

Al-Ayyam said troops delivered a demolition order for a Palestinian family in the Nablus village of Furush Beit Dajan.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported French President Francois Hollande as reiterating his country and the international community’s eagerness to help bring about the two-state solution.

It also reported British Labor Party Leader Jeremy Corbyn reiterating the need to end the Israeli occupation and achieve the two-state solution.
