Cabinet members headed by Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah meeting in Hebron.
HEBRON, October 4, 2016 (WAFA) – The government decided on Tuesday to appoint municipal councils in areas of the West Bank and Gaza where council members have resigned in order to run for the now postponed local elections, according to a cabinet statement.
The decision came after the government decided to postpone municipal elections, originally scheduled to be held on October 8, for four months.
The government said the decision was due to the resignation of members and heads of several municipal councils as required by law in order to run for the new elections.
The elections were postponed after the Palestinian Supreme Court suspended them in September due to issues raised regarding holding them in the Gaza Strip.
Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah headed the weekly cabinet meeting, which normally meets in Ramallah, in the southern West Bank city of Hebron to show support for the old section of the city and its residents suffering from Israeli military restrictions and settler harassment.
