HEBRON, October 4, 2016 (WAFA) – The Cabinet decided on Tuesday to postpone municipal elections by four months.
Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah told the weekly cabinet meeting held in the southern West Bank city of Hebron that the decision was to ensure a safer legal environment for the elections. He added that the decision comes in the best interest of the people of Palestine.
On Monday, the Supreme Court ruled that municipal elections could take place in the West Bank only with the exclusion of the Gaza Strip.
Municipal elections were supposed to take place in both the West Bank and Gaza Strip on October 8. However, the Supreme Court suspended them on September 10, citing the exclusion of Jerusalem from the electoral process and concerns about courts in the Gaza Strip.
