Newspapers review: IMF report on Palestinian economy focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, September 8, 2016 (WAFA) – The International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) report that painted a gloomy picture of Palestinian economy hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies on Thursday.

Quoting the IMF report, al-Quds said: “]Political and security[ uncertainties weigh heavily on the prospects for growth.”

Al-Ayyam said the IMF painted a gloomy picture of the Palestinian economy as a result of Israeli occupation, ongoing Israeli settlement construction and internal Palestinian division.

Al-Hayat said Palestinian economy was suffering from many difficulties as a result of Israel, settlement construction and Palestinian divisions.

Highlighting the demolition of Palestinian structures in its main front page news item, al-Ayyam said Israeli forces proceeded with the demolition of Palestinian structures, razing land and blocking entrances to six Palestinian villages in the northern West Bank district of  Nablus.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said 40 dunums of Palestinian land and two water wells were razed by Israeli forces in the Hebron village of Beit Ula.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida added demolition notices were delivered by Israeli forces to three homes in the Hebron village of Tarqumiya.

Highlighting latest Israeli violations against Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in bold font, al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said Jewish settlers performed a formal wedding ceremony on the grounds of the mosque compound.

The three dailies also reported hunger striking Balboul brothers rejected Israeli Supreme Court’s order to temporarily suspend their administrative detention and decided to continue with their hunger strike.

The dailies also highlighted a footage showing Dutch parliamentarian Tunahan Kuzu, who could be seen wearing a Palestinian flag pin, refusing to shake hands with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the latter’s visit to the country.

Al-Quds reported senior Fatah official Jibril Rjoub as stating Palestinian Christians are the “salt of the earth” and a “basic component of the Palestinian national fabric.”

Rjoub made his comments after he came under criticism for calling Palestinian Christians the “Merry Christmas bunch” during an interview with an Egyptian television for voting for Hamas 10 years ago.

Al-Ayyam said that despite telling the parents of slain 27-year-old Mustafa Nimer, who was shot dead by Israeli forces during a raid into the Jerusalem area Shufat refugee camp, that he was “killed by mistake,” police sought to shift the blame for the killing, blaming Mustafa’s brother-in-law, Ali, 25, for causing the death due to reckless driving.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Palestinians in the Ramallah town of Beit Rima attended the funeral of Ahed Rimawi who was killed in the collapse of an under-construction parking garage in Tel Aviv.
