Newspaper Review: Demolition of Three Houses, Children’s Park Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, April 13, 2016 (WAFA) – The demolition of three Palestinian houses in the Bethlehem village of al-Walaja and a children’s park in the Nablus village of Zaatara hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.

The three dailies reported that Israeli forces demolished three Palestinian houses under construction in al-Walaja under the pretext of unlicensed construction.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida also reported that Israeli forces demolished a children’s park in the Nablus village of Zaatara.

Al-Quds reported that several Palestinians were suffocated as Israeli forces raided the Jenin village of Beit Qad.

It added that Israeli forces raided the Ramallah village of Silwad and Bethlehem town of Beit Fajjar as well as sealed the main entrance of the Nablus village of Aqraba.

Al-Ayyam also reported that Israeli police sealed a building belonging to the Islamic Waqf in Jerusalem.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported that extremist Jewish settlers forced their way into Al-Aqsa Mosque compound as calls were made for Jews to offer sacrifices during the Jewish Passover holiday inside the mosque or upon its ruins.

Al-Quds highlighted media reports that the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) had halted funds allocated two left-wing faction members, namely the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).

It reported Fatah Spokesperson Osama al-Qawasmi as saying that Fatah stressed its historic national partnership with PFLP.

It also reported two members of DFLP political bureau as saying that they hadn’t been informed about any PLO’s decision to halt their funding.

Furthermore, President Mahmoud Abbas was quoted in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida as stating: “There is an urgent need for a UN Security Council resolution on halting Israeli settlement construction.”

He was also quoted in al-Ayyam as backing the French initiative to convene an international peace conference this summer.

Highlighting a Peace Now report on Israeli settlement construction, the three dailies reported that Israel had advanced plans for settlement construction in the first quarter of 2016.

Peace Now was quoted as announcing: “The figures of the first quarter of 2016 illustrate an upturn in the approval of plans and sharply increase the total number of units” promoted by the current Israeli government.

Regionally, the three dailies reported that senior Fatah security official Fathi Zeidan was assassinated in a car explosion in Mieh Mieh refugee camp, east of the southern Lebanese city of Sidon.

Al-Quds added that three Palestinian refugees were killed in al-Yarmouk refugee camp in Damascus.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported PLO official Anwar Abdul-Hadi as saying that the Islamic State group (ISIS) has taken control of the largest part of Yarmouk camp in Damascus.
