Starmer affirms Palestinians' "inalienable right" to statehood

LONDON, July 25, 2025 (WAFA) – British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has declared that the Palestinian people have an “inalienable right” to their own state, amid increasing political pressure and growing international momentum toward the recognition of Palestinian statehood.

Speaking on Thursday evening, Starmer responded to mounting concerns from Labour MPs over the deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, describing the situation in the besieged territory as a “humanitarian catastrophe” and condemning the suffering there as “unspeakable and indefensible.”

His remarks come hours after French President Emmanuel Macron pledged to formally recognize the State of Palestine at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September—a move that has added to international calls for concrete steps toward a two-state solution.

While reaffirming his government’s support for Palestinian statehood, Starmer stopped short of committing to immediate recognition. “We are clear that statehood is the inalienable right of the Palestinian people,” he said. “A ceasefire will put us on a path to the recognition of a Palestinian state and a two-state solution which guarantees peace and security for Palestinians and Israelis.”

The Labour government has maintained that recognition of Palestinian statehood should be timed to contribute meaningfully to a sustainable peace process, rather than as a symbolic gesture.
