VIENNA, June 3, 2014 (WAFA) – Group of the Progressive Alliance
of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament welcomed, in a press
release on Tuesday, the announcement of a Palestinian national consensus
government, considering the move an important step towards achieving peace.
“The new Palestinian government is a chance for Palestinians to
fight for the interests of all Palestinians in a united way,” said the
statement.
It said, “It is good that all members of this new non-partisan
government, which does not include any Hamas members, are accepting the basic
and agreed conditions to find a peace agreement with Israel. It could be the
start to think of steps towards peace for the whole Palestinian territory: West
bank and Gaza.”
“The new government upholds all the principals of the Middle
East Quartet - including the US, the EU, the UN and Russia - by recognizing
Israel, refraining from violence and fulfilling all existing agreements.”
'We call on the EU and European governments to continue
their financial support for the new government.”
“It is particularly important that living conditions and freedom
of movement for all Palestinians are increased. But it is equally important to guarantee
the security of all citizens of Palestine and Israel,” concluded the statement.
