UN Security Council to vote on Algeria-backed Gaza ceasefire resolution amid humanitarian crisis

NEW YORK, June 4, 2025 (WAFA) – The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to vote today on a draft resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire and the lifting of restrictions on humanitarian aid entering the Gaza Strip.

The resolution was drafted by Algeria in coordination with the E10 Member States, the ten non-permanent members of the Security Council elected for two-year terms.

The resolution describes the humanitarian situation in Gaza as catastrophic and calls for the immediate and unconditional lifting of all restrictions on humanitarian aid entry, ensuring its safe, unrestricted, and widespread distribution through the United Nations and its humanitarian partners.

It also demands the restoration of all essential humanitarian services in accordance with these principles, international humanitarian law, and Security Council resolutions.

Palestine’s Permanent Observer to the United Nations, Ambassador Riyad Mansour, stressed that the Arab Group at the UN will not accept continued paralysis of the Security Council and UN organizations.

He emphasized that the Security Council bears the responsibility to stop the Israeli aggression against Gaza, expose those committing crimes against Palestinians, and hold them accountable.

He further asserted that Israel does not have the authority to determine the future of the peoples of the Middle East, particularly the Palestinians, who will decide their own future with the support of the overwhelming majority of nations.

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has been carrying out actions described as genocide in the Gaza Strip, resulting in the killing of more than 54,510 civilians, mostly women and children, and the wounding of 124,901 others. Over 11,000 people remain missing, alongside hundreds of thousands displaced.
