BRLIN, June 4, 2025 (WAFA) – Prominent scientists, cultural figures, and civil society leaders in Germany have called on the government to stop sending weapons to Israel, amid the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
In an open letter published Wednesday and reported by Der Spiegel, around 50 notable personalities—including climate activist Luisa Neubauer, sociologist Harald Welzer, and musician Daniel Barenboim—urged Berlin to push for an immediate ceasefire and comprehensive humanitarian aid for Palestinians.
The letter criticized the German government for failing to uphold its international legal obligations to prevent war crimes and condemned the disproportionate military tactics used by Israel.
Signatories also called for empowering independent international bodies, such as the UN, to deliver aid freely to Gaza’s population.
The move signals growing public pressure on Germany to reconsider its arms exports to Israel amid ongoing violence.
