Arab League calls for international protection for Palestinians and condemns colonist attacks

CAIRO, October 13, 2026 (WAFA) - The Arab League Council, at the level of permanent representatives, called on the High Contracting Parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention to intervene immediately to protect the Palestinian people from Israeli occupation crimes and colonist violence, in accordance with international law, international legitimacy resolutions, and relevant conventions.

The call came at the conclusion of an extraordinary session held at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo at the request of the State of Palestine. The meeting addressed ways to provide international protection for Palestinians amid ongoing aggression, genocide, ethnic cleansing, and attacks by armed Israeli colonists, as well as ensuring respect for the legal status of Jerusalem.

The council urged the UN Security Council to fulfill its responsibilities for maintaining international peace and security by adopting a resolution ensuring international protection for the Palestinian people and implementing relevant resolutions, including those affirming the applicability of the Fourth Geneva Convention to the occupied Palestinian territory, including Jerusalem, and Resolution 2334 of 2016 concerning Israeli settlements.

It strongly condemned escalating attacks by Israeli colonists against Palestinian farmers during the olive harvest season in the occupied West Bank, including the destruction of trees, theft of crops, and prevention of farmers from accessing their lands. The council stressed that these attacks violate Palestinians’ rights to their land and natural resources.

The council called for continued Arab diplomatic efforts, at both bilateral and multilateral levels, to secure effective international protection for Palestinians, including convening an emergency special session of the UN General Assembly under the “Uniting for Peace” procedure.

It also urged the Security Council to adopt a resolution under Chapter VII of the UN Charter requiring Israel, the occupying power, to comply with its resolutions concerning Palestine, end its aggression in all forms, and implement the orders and advisory opinions of the International Court of Justice.

The council stressed the need to implement Arab summit resolutions calling for a boycott of companies operating in Israeli settlements built on occupied Palestinian land and for Israeli settlement organizations and entities described as terrorist to be placed on Arab countries’ national terrorism lists.

The council strongly condemned Colombia’s stated intention to open an embassy in Jerusalem, describing the move as a serious violation of international law and international legitimacy resolutions. It called on the Colombian government to reverse the decision, warning of potential repercussions for Arab-Colombian political, diplomatic, and economic relations.

The council condemned Israeli measures against the British Consulate General in occupied Jerusalem, reaffirming that East Jerusalem is occupied Palestinian territory over which Israel has no sovereignty. It commended Britain’s position on the city’s legal status, its support for a two-state solution, and its backing of sanctions against Israeli settlements.

The council underscored the vital role of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and the need to ensure the continued delivery of its services throughout its areas of operation, including Jerusalem. It called on the Arab Group in New York to follow up on the implementation of the resolution at the United Nations and the Security Council.

The council concluded that continued Israeli aggression and occupation against the Palestinian people, the State of Palestine’s land, and other occupied Arab territories threaten Arab national security and undermine international peace and security. It called for stronger joint Arab action and the activation of collective Arab defense mechanisms, including the Joint Defense and Economic Cooperation Treaty among member states.
