Prime Minister chairs economic meeting to monitor markets and protect local industry

RAMALLAH, April 8, 2026 (WAFA) – Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa chaired a meeting on Wednesday at his office in Ramallah with the permanent Ministerial Economic Development Committee to review market conditions, the availability of essential goods, supply chains, and food security reserves.

The meeting also focused on efforts to combat the influx of low-quality goods into the Palestinian market and the policies being implemented to address the issue.

Officials reviewed progress made by the national team tasked with tackling market dumping, particularly in sectors such as footwear, stone, food products, chemicals, and detergents. Measures discussed included stricter enforcement of mandatory technical standards on imported goods, verification of certificates of origin to prevent fraud, increased product sampling, and the removal of non-compliant goods from the market.

Participants also examined four key government tracks aimed at supporting the Palestinian industrial sector. These include enforcing policies that prioritize the purchase of locally produced goods—especially in public tenders—implementing anti-dumping measures, expanding renewable energy projects for various sectors, particularly industry, in cooperation with international partners, and preparing to launch wage support programs for industrial workers. Additional initiatives target the most affected industrial sectors, especially in vulnerable areas.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister directed the Ministerial Economic Committee to prepare policies and procedures to control dumping in the local market in the construction, metal, and agricultural industries, thereby protecting the market from substandard goods and products and safeguarding national products.

The meeting also discussed a new draft Consumer Protection Law that has been prepared to combat the manipulation of specifications and smuggling, protect citizens, and strengthen penalties. The committee was instructed to conduct consultations with all relevant authorities and stakeholders before submitting the draft to the Cabinet.
