Latin patriarch says Gaza’s suffering will not be forgotten, vows commitment to rebuilding

GAZA, December 20, 2025 (WAFA) — Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa stressed that what Gaza has endured will not be forgotten, while calling for looking toward the future and reaffirming a commitment to rebuilding homes, schools, and life itself.

On Friday, Patriarch Pizzaballa arrived in Gaza City accompanied by the Patriarchal Vicar General Bishop William Shomali and a delegation from the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, as part of the annual Christmas pastoral visit to the Holy Family Church ahead of Christmas according to the Western calendar.

Addressing members of the church, the patriarch said, “We will not forget what happened, but we look ahead. We will rebuild our homes and schools, and we will rebuild our lives. We are from here, and we will remain here. In this sea of destruction, we seek to be an example to everyone of what it means to rebuild.”

He added that for the first time since the outbreak of the war, he felt a sense of comfort being among the people in Gaza. “I know the situation is difficult, and I see it in the lives of children, in the school, and in the activities that continue despite everything. Yet even in this darkness, a flame of hope remains present,” he said.

Patriarch Pizzaballa emphasized that Gaza is not alone, noting that churches, institutions, and Christians around the world stand united with its people. He said the community had demonstrated throughout the war, and even more clearly today, the meaning of remaining strong in faith, offering a living testimony of resilience, belief, and hope that has reached the world.

Reflecting on the meaning of Christmas in this context, the patriarch said that standing alongside people is a message in itself. “We were here during the war, and today, more than ever, we must remain here, because this is the source of our life,” he said.

He concluded by stressing that love alone is capable of healing, adding that while walls and homes can be rebuilt, hearts must be healed first. He affirmed that all churches will remain united in accompanying Gaza and in rebuilding the church and life within it.
