RAMALLAH, May 25, 2025 (WAFA) – Former Chairman of the Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission, Minister Walid Assaf, passed away this Sunday afternoon at the age of 65.
Born in the village of Kafr Laqif in Qalqilya Governorate, northwest of the West Bank, Assaf earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Engineering and Technology in Lahore, Pakistan, in 1986.
Assaf won a legislative seat in the 2006 Palestinian elections representing the Fatah movement for Qalqilya Governorate. He participated in several committees, most notably as head of the Land and Settlement Committee in 2006 and as a member of the Economic and Agricultural Committee in the Palestinian Legislative Council.
On May 16, 2012, Assaf was appointed Minister of Agriculture in the 14th Palestinian government headed by Salam Fayyad, continuing in the role under the first and second governments of Rami Hamdallah until June 2, 2014.
On March 23, 2015, he was appointed chairman of the Wall and Settlement Resistance Commission, succeeding the late martyr Ziad Abu Ein. He served in this position until March 31, 2021.
