Head of Palestinian trade unions says preparations complete to receive solidarity delegation of int’l trade, labor unions

RAMALLAH, Monday, May 20, 2024 (WAFA) - The Secretary-General of the Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions (PGFTU), Shaher Saad, said today that the Federation has completed preparations to receive the international trade union and labor solidarity delegation, which is expected to visit Palestine between May 28-30.

Saad, in a press statement, said that the delegation will include the heads of the major labor and union federations in the world, pointing out that all of these federations represent the community of male and female workers in the United Nations, the International Labour Organization (ILO), the World Trade Organization (WTO), the World Bank, and the G8 and G20 groups.

He said that this visit represents a natural extension of the global solidarity movement with the Palestinian people, whose scope and effectiveness is expanding from Melbourne to California, reaching Palestine itself.

Saad added that the members of the delegation seek to learn closely about the suffering of the Palestinian people, meet Palestinian leaders, and learn about the labor, trade union, social, and political activities of the Palestinian community.

“From the first moment of the barbaric Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, the General Federation of Palestinian Trade Unions embarked on a large-scale global communications campaign to explain what is happening in Palestine, expose the crimes of genocide committed in Gaza and the West Bank and attract more support and advocacy for our people,” he revealed.

He noted that this helped the Federation’s allies and friends organize marches in the streets of Europe, Australia, Asia, and the cities of the United States, including massive public and student demonstrations.

This also helped in disrupting the movement of transport and shipping at ports suspected of exporting weapons and ammunition to the Israeli occupation state, in response to the appeal launched by the Federation on October 19, 2023.

Saad said this appeal called on workers in industrial facilities around the world that export their products to the Israeli occupation state to stop working there, especially those working in the oil sector, petrochemical, mining, or shipping and transportation sectors, due to the role that these products and resources play in feeding the Israeli war machine,
