UN Secretary-General “appalled" by Israeli military escalation in Rafah

NEW YORK, Tuesday, May 14, 2024 (WAFA) – The UN Secretary-General António Guterres today said he was appalled by the Israeli army's escalation of military operations in and around the city of Rafah, in the southern besieged Gaza Strip.

These developments are further impeding humanitarian access and worsening an already dire situation, he said in a statement.

The UN Secretary-General stressed that civilians must be respected and protected at all times in Rafah and elsewhere in Gaza, affirming that nowhere is safe now for people in Gaza.

He reiterated his urgent appeal for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, calling for the Rafah crossing to be re-opened immediately.

"We must have unimpeded humanitarian access throughout Gaza," Guterres said.
