International Organization for Migration deeply concerned over forced displacement of already displaced persons in Rafah

GENEVA, Monday, May 6, 2024 (WAFA) - The International Organization for Migration (IOM) expressed deep concern that already displaced people are once again being forcibly displaced by escalating hostilities in Rafah, in southern Gaza. “People are left with nowhere safe to seek refuge.”

“The humanitarian situation has reached catastrophic levels in Gaza, and we cannot afford another escalation leading to more suffering and loss of life,” said IOM in a post on the social media platform X.

“It is absolutely critical that humanitarian aid reaches those in need. In line with international humanitarian law, IOM urgently calls for unrestricted access to aid. This is essential to ensure that those in need can access the life-saving support they desperately require,” said IOM.

Earlier this morning, the Israeli occupation ordered civilians seeking shelter in Rafah city to move to the al-Mawasi area to the north of the city.

The Palestinian Bedouin town on the southern coast of the Gaza Strip, Al-Mawasi area - a so-called humanitarian safe zone where people have been told to flee - has already been targeted twice, said Oxfam in a statement issued today.
