RAMALLAH, Friday, January 26, 2023 (WAFA) - Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh said that the ruling of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) constituted the end of Israel's impunity era, which he stressed obliges countries supporting Israel to refrain from doing so.
The court's rejection of Israel’s request to dismiss the case filed against it by South Africa implies a high degree of importance because it puts Israel in the dock for war crimes, marking the first time for Israel to stand trial before the court, said the Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister said he was hoping the court’s decision included an order for an immediate ceasefire given the severe suffering inflicted upon the people of the Gaza Strip as a result of the daily massacres which have led to thousands of civilians being killed, mostly children and women, and widespread famine and epidemics that devastate the displaced persons in overrun shelter centers.
He expressed gratitude to South Africa for the files it has submitted to the court and for its professional arguments that accused Israel of committing crimes against the Palestinian people.
He also expressed hope that the court would continue its deliberations until the issuance of a final decision condemning Israel for its genocide and ethnic cleansing crimes against the Palestinian people, which rose to unprecedented levels in world history.
Shtayyeh held Israel fully responsible for the deteriorating catastrophic humanitarian situation facing the people in the Strip, urging pressure to be exerted on Israel to compel it to stop its aggression and facilitate “urgently” the flow of humanitarian and relief aid into the Gaza Strip.
