Foreign Ministry says Papua New Guinea's opening of an embassy in Jerusalem a violation of international law

RAMALLAH, Wednesday, September 6, 2023 (WAFA) - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates today condemned the decision by Papua New Guinea to open an embassy in occupied Jerusalem and considered it a flagrant violation of international law and United Nations resolutions related to the Holy City, its legal and political status, and the just and legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.

The Foreign Ministry considered in a statement this step an aggression against the Palestinian people and their rights, warning Papua New Guinea against standing on the wrong side of history while stressing that this decision causes great harm to chances of achieving peace on the basis of a two-state solution.

It said the decision is an unacceptable normalization with the occupation and its crimes and a blatant defiance of relevant United Nations resolutions at a time when the occupying state is escalating its violations and aggression against the Palestinian people, their homeland, property, and holy places.

The Foreign Ministry stressed that it will continue to pursue the countries that opened embassies in Jerusalem or transferred their embassies there through political, diplomatic and legal means for their unjustified aggression against the Palestinian people and their rights, calling on the government of Papua New Guinea to immediately retract this decision.
