RAMALLAH, Saturday, March 27, 2021 (WAFA) – The outcome of last night’s Fatah Central Committee meeting, which was chaired by President Mahmoud Abbas, as well as the Israeli army’s violent crackdown on peaceful anti-settlements Palestinian protests in the occupied territories were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.
The three papers – al-Quds, al-Ayyam, and al-Hayat al-Jadida – highlighted Fatah’s approval of the general outline for its candidates for the upcoming legislative council elections planned for May 22.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida daily also said President Abbas welcomed during the meeting the call by the International Quartet for the resumption of meaningful Palestinian-Israeli negotiations based on a two-state solution in accordance with the internationally agreed resolutions.
Al-Quds daily said Fatah also called on the international community to put a stop to Israel’s measures to change the character of sections of the occupied city of Jerusalem and turn them into Jewish areas.
It said residents of Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of East Jerusalem have asked Jordan to send them documents proving ownership of the homes they live in as Israel is going to forcibly evict them from their homes in May claiming the property was owned by Jews prior to the 1948 war that led to Israel’s creation on three-quarters of the area of historic Palestine and the displacement of the Palestinian people from their homes.
Al-Ayyam daily said the Palestinian residents of Sheikh Jarrah and supporters held a protest against the planned evictions.
Al-Quds also said Israel started to build 125 new housing units in Jabal Abu Ghneim, or Har Homa colonial settlement, to the south of Jerusalem.
The three papers also highlighted the Israeli army crackdown on the protests, mainly in Beit Dajan and Kufr Qaddoum villages in the northern West Bank, and said dozens of people were hurt when the Israeli soldiers attacked the protesters in an effort to disperse them.
Al-Ayyam quoted Hamas leader Mousa Abu Marzouq saying that his movement will not seek to name a candidate for the Palestinian presidential elections scheduled for July 31, two months after the legislative elections.
Coronavirus and its toll at home, the region, and the world was also highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.
In other news, al-Quds said thousands of people participated in the funeral of Omar Barghouti, 68, a long-time resistance fighter who died of coronavirus.
