Presidency affirms Palestinian statehood, rejects Netanyahu's colonial E1 plan

RAMALLAH, September 11, 2025 (WAFA) – Nabil Abu Rudeineh, spokesman for President Mahmoud Abbas, has reaffirmed that the establishment of an independent State of Palestine, with East Jerusalem as its capital, under the two-state solution and international legitimacy remains the key to peace and stability in the region.

In response to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signing a framework agreement to expand settlements in East Jerusalem under the E1 plan, and his statements denying a Palestinian state, Abu Rudeineh said that the State of Palestine is recognized by the international community, noting that 149 UN member states have recognized the state, with recognition continuing worldwide. He emphasized that establishing an independent Palestinian state does not require permission from anyone.

Abu Rudeineh condemned all settlement activity as illegal under international law, particularly citing UN Security Council Resolution 2334. He warned that Netanyahu and his far-right government are pushing the entire region toward a crisis, and stressed that peace is unattainable without an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital on 1967 borders.

He pointed out that UN Security Council and General Assembly resolutions, along with international consensus, have elevated Palestine to the status of a UN observer state and allowed the Palestinian flag to be raised alongside those of other nations.

Abu Rudeineh urged countries that have not recognized Palestine to do so immediately and to support its full UN membership to protect the two-state solution and Palestinian rights, foremost among them the right to self-determination.

He concluded that the Palestinian people remain steadfast in pursuing their legitimate national goals of freedom, independence, and statehood, in accordance with international legitimacy, with the support of Arab brothers and all countries committed to peace.
