AMMAN, Monday, November 16, 2020 (WAFA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Riyad Malki and his Jordanian counterpart Ayman Safadi discussed today the latest developments regarding the Palestinian issue.
During a meeting in Amman, the two ministers tackled the efforts exerted to relaunch serious and effective negotiations to resolve the conflict on the basis of the two-state solution, and in accordance with international law, United Nations resolutions, and the Arab Peace Initiative.
They stressed that achieving a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace is a strategic option that guarantees the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state on the pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
They also highlighted the need for Israel to stop all its illegal measures that undermine the two-state solution and chances of achieving a just peace, especially the annexation of lands and the building and expansion of settlements.
They further condemned Israel's decision to build new settlement housing units in the so-called "Givat Hamatos" and "Ramat Shlomo" illegal settlements, in occupied East Jerusalem.
Meanwhile, Safadi stressed that the Palestinian cause is the central issue and the basis of the conflict, noting that resolving it in a manner that ensures the fulfillment of all Palestinian legitimate rights is the key to a just, lasting, and comprehensive peace.
The Jordanian minister updated Malki on the efforts made by Jordan with international partners to mobilize financial support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to enable the agency to continue providing its vital services to refugees in these difficult circumstances.
For his part, Malki expressed appreciation of Jordan's firm stances and roles, led by King Abdullah II, in supporting the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights, especially their right to a sovereign independent state.
Malki also stressed the importance of Hashemite Custodian of the Islamic and Christian Holy Sites in Jerusalem, which protects the holy sites and preserves their Arab, Islamic and Christian identity as well as their historical and legal status quo.
