RAMALLAH, Tuesday, October 27, 2020 (WAFA) – The virtual debate yesterday at the United Nations Security Council to discuss President Mahmoud Abbas’ call on the UN Secretary General to convene an international peace conference on the Middle East conflict, as well as the illegal Israeli settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territories, were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.
The main front-page headline in al-Hayat al-Jadida that went across the page said: “The world adopts at the Security Council President Abbas’ vision of an international peace conference.”
Al-Ayyam daily had more or less the same headline but added that the international conference aims to achieve the two-state solution.
The third daily, al-Quds, had a similar headline but lower on the front page, adding that there were also calls by member states for an end to Israeli settlement expansion in and annexation of the occupied territories.
The main front-page story in al-Quds reflected on the illegal Israeli settlement activities and said that Israel has approved the construction of settlement units in the Bethlehem area. It also reported on the Israeli demolition of a house, issuance of stop construction orders, and detention of Palestinians.
These issues were also covered by the two other Palestinian Arabic dailies published in the occupied Palestinian territories, with al-Ayyam adding that Israeli settlers have “executed” more olive trees.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted the Palestinian Minister of Justice, Mohammad Shalaldeh, saying a Palestinian resident of the northern West Bank village of Burin is going to file the first lawsuit in a Palestinian court against Israeli settlers.
The three papers also highlighted the situation of administrative detainee in Israel, Maher al-Akhras, who has been on hunger strike for 93 days demanding an end to his incarceration without charge.
The Palestinian cabinet meeting and its decisions were also highlighted on the front page of the three dailies, with al-Hayat al-Jadida quoting Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh expressing support for Palestinian women issues.
Coronavirus and its toll at home, in the region, and the world was also highlighted on the front page of the three dailies.
Al-Ayyam said Shtayyeh has launched the “Amankom” application on the phones to control the coronavirus disease in Palestine by detecting infected people and those who were in their circles.
They also reported on the rush to the White House between the two American presidential contenders Donald Trump and Jo Biden.
