RAMALLAH, Friday, October 09, 2020 (WAFA) – Assaults by the Israeli army and settlers in the occupied territories against Palestinian civilians and property as well as the latest developments with the novel coronavirus pandemic were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.
Al-Quds daily reported in its main front-page story on Israeli plans to demolish an elementary school in a Ramallah-area village after an Israeli court has rejected an appeal against the demolition.
It said Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh has strongly condemned the demolition and called for an international intervention to stop it.
Al-Ayyam said Israeli settlers burnt down olive trees in several West Bank villages with the start of the olive harvest season in the occupied territories, while soldiers attacked Palestinians protesting against Israel's settlement activities and violence.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida daily highlighted the coronavirus pandemic and said the Ministry of Health has warned of an upsurge in the infections with the winter season as four corona-related deaths and 416 new cases were reported in Palestine yesterday.
All the dailies covered the Israeli violations and the coronavirus news with al-Quds saying that Saeb Erekat, secretary-general of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), has contracted the corona disease.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the disease has claimed the life of the first Palestinian physician and said Harb Rudwan, 51, director of al-Yamama hospital in al-Khader town, in Bethlehem, has died a week after contracting the disease.
On the Palestinian efforts to call for an international peace conference on the Middle East conflict, al-Quds quoted Palestine's permanent observer to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, saying that the UN Security Council is going to hold an open session at the end of this month on President Mahmoud Abbas' call for an international peace conference.
Al-Ayyam quoted Saeb Erekat responding to the Saudi criticism of the Palestinians for opposing normalization with Israel. Erekat said, according to the daily, that "we are being accused of treason because we refused to keep Al-Aqsa (Mosque) and Jerusalem under Israeli control."
Al-Hayat al-Jadida said President Abbas congratulated the new crown prince of Kuwait.
It also said Fatah official, Jibril Rjoub, discussed in Beirut with the head of the Islamic Jihad, Ziad Nakhaleh, reconciliation and national partnership.
