Newspapers Review: Coronavirus deaths and cases in Palestine return to dominate front-page headlines

RAMALLAH, Thursday, August 27, 2020 (WAFA) – The corona pandemic in Palestine returned to dominate front-page headlines of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies, which said in their edition today that four Palestinians have died after contracting the disease and over 600 new cases were recorded.

They also said the virus has reached the Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails causing concern among the prisoners and their advocacy groups.

Al-Quds said 100 new cases were reported in the occupied Palestinian capital, Jerusalem, and five new ones among diaspora Palestinians.

Al-Ayyam said Gaza has imposed a lockdown and banned movement in an effort to contain the corona disease lately found in larger numbers in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the Red Cross has warned of a double crisis in Gaza due to corona and the Israeli blockade.

In other news, Al-Quds reported on the Israeli house demolition orders issued to Palestinian residents of the village of Nahalin near Bethlehem and the injury of a Palestinian after he was shot by Israeli soldiers in the north of the West Bank.

It quoted Nabil Shaath, an advisor to President Mahmoud Abbas, explaining to the Chinese news agency Xinhua why Abbas has refused to meet with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo during his visit to the region.

It said in a report from its Washington correspondent that Pompeo used his presence in Jerusalem to address the Republican convention in an attempt to convince evangelicals to vote for his boss, Donald Trump, while al-Ayyam said Pompeo came under attack in Washington for giving a campaign speech from Jerusalem while on an official trip.
