RAMALLAH, Saturday, August 22, 2020 (WAFA) – The crackdown by the Israeli occupation forces on peaceful Palestinian protests against settlement activities and land grab in several West Bank areas, as well as developments with the coronavirus in Palestine and around the world were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.
One spot of confrontations was Kufr Qaddoum village in the north of the West Bank where Palestinians hold weekly protests against takeover of their land to build the separation wall and expand illegal settlements.
Another was in the village of Haris, also in the north of the West Bank, and al-Hayat al-Jadida daily printed a picture showing Israeli occupation soldiers holding to the ground with great forces an injured Palestinian.
The three newspapers also reported on Israeli police firing of teargas inside Makassed hospital on Mount of Olives in occupied East Jerusalem.
Another topic highlighted in the dailies is the number of coronavirus cases and deaths in Palestine in the last day and said that two deaths were confirmed as a result of corona and 457 new cases were recorded, as came in the top front-page story in al-Ayyam daily.
Al-Quds daily also reported on the coronavirus cases in nearby Jordan and Israel, and quoted the World Health Organization saying that corona will be eradicated in less than two years.
The three dailies said Palestinians marked yesterday the 51st anniversary for the terror attack against Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem when an Australian terrorist set fire to the mosque with an intention to destroy it in order to build a Jewish temple on its ruins destroying as a result a historic pulpit and sections of the mosque and almost gutting it down before Palestinians were able to put off the fire.
The papers also highlighted statements by Saudi Prince Turki al-Faysal saying that normalization of relations with Israel will come only after a Palestinian state is established.
Al-Ayyam reported on the tense situation in the Gaza Strip following several days of intermittent Israeli air raids and firing of rockets from Gaza into bordering Israel towns. It said the coming hours are critical as mediators, including the Qatari envoy, are trying to defuse the situation ignited after Hamas, which controls Gaza, has complained that Israel has not honored its part of the deal to improve the living conditions in the impoverished and blockaded Gaza Strip.
