Newspapers Review: Lebanon following the port explosion, coronavirus focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Monday, August 10, 2020 (WAFA) – The volatile situation in Lebanon following the port explosion last week that rocked and devastated the capital, Beirut, and the new corona cases and fatalities in Palestine were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.

Al-Quds led with the Lebanon developments, particularly the violent clashes between demonstrators and security forces, as well as the meeting of the donor countries, which allocated 250 million euros to support Lebanon.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said two Palestinians were among the dead in the Beirut port explosion. It said Palestinians in the West Bank have expressed support for the Lebanese people.

Al-Ayyam printed a picture of the protesters near the parliament building in Beirut and said that two Lebanese cabinet ministers have resigned.

Coronavirus continues to dominate front-page headline in the local Palestinian dailies with al-Ayyam saying that one person has died from the disease and 280 new cases were recorded yesterday in Palestine, including three in the Gaza Strip, which so far had a relatively low number of cases that did not exceed the 100 mark.

It said three Palestinians have died in occupied East Jerusalem from corona and 165 new cases were recorded in the city on Saturday and Sunday.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said one Palestinian was injured yesterday when Israeli settlers attacked his car in the north of the West Bank.

Al-Quds said Israel has published tenders for the construction of thousands of housing units in its illegal settlements built on occupied Palestinian land.

It had a report about Dalia Smoudi, a 23-year-old mother of two children, who was killed by an Israeli army bullet last week in the northern West Bank city of Jenin while she was in her home.

Al-Ayyam said Israel is threatening a strong response to the firing of incendiary balloons from Gaza.

It said official documents showed that Israel uses the firing zones pretext in order to force Palestinians out of their lands and homes in the West Bank.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said yesterday marked the 12th anniversary for the death of Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish and that President Mahmoud Abbas has delegated Deputy Prime Minister Ziad Abu Amr to lay a wreath on Darwish’s grave in Ramallah.
