Rafah Crossing to Remain Closed, says Egyptian Security

Al-ARRESH, EGYPT, July 8, 2013 (WAFA) – The Rafah crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt will remain closed “until further notice,” Egyptian security sources said Monday.

The crossing was closed following the ousting of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi forcing hundreds of Gazans to get stranded on the borders. Rafah is the only exit route for Gazans outside Erez crossing with Israel.

The sources said the Egyptian forces will continue to destroy tunnels Gazans have dug under the borders with the Sinai to smuggle goods, fuel and other necessities following the land, air and sea blockade Israel has imposed on the Gaza Strip since 2007.

A total of 15 tunnels have been destroyed in the last four days, said the sources.

Hamas, an Islamist group which rules the Gaza Strip since 2007, is a close ally of Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, whose rule the army is trying to change.
