Parliament Speaker Gets Six Months Administrative Detention

RAMALLAH, January 24, 2012 (WAFA) – An Israeli military court in Ofer army camp, near Ramallah, Tuesday sentenced Palestinian parliament speaker from Hamas, Aziz Dweik, to six months administrative detention, according to his attorney, Fadi Qawasmi.

He said Dweik was not charged with any offense.

Dweik was first arrested in 2006 in retaliation for the abduction of an Israeli soldier near Gaza and released after serving three years in prison.

He was arrested on Thursday at a checkpoint near Ramallah as he was on his way home in Hebron.

With the arrest of Dweik and three other Hamas lawmakers in the last week, one of them taken from the Red Cross office in Jerusalem on Monday, Israel will be holding 27 lawmakers, 24 of them from Hamas.
