GAZA, December 13, 2009 (WAFA)- Dr. Christopher Bulstrode, a senior surgeon specialist has arrived in Gaza in order to give a one-week training with Medecins du Monde (MDM)– France in the field of war and trauma surgery. The training will benefit surgeons and patients from Gaza and will take place at Nasser hospital in Khan Younes for one week, starting from the 14th of December 2009 .
MDM said I a press release the training session given by Dr. Bulstrode aims at upgrading the knowledge of orthopedic surgeons from Gaza in the field of war and trauma orthopedic medicine.
On Monday, about 100 patients suffering from bones-related injuries will be consulted in the Nasser hospital of Khan Yunes. 15 cases will be elected for imminent surgery that will be carried out by Dr. Bulstrode, along with Medecins du Monde – France specialists and Gaza’s orthopedic surgeons.
The selections of 15 patients will be made according to the origin and the gravity of the wound, as well as the emergency of the case. Cases will include highly specific surgical operations on patients , among others, suffering from bullets or explosive-related injuries, that are often not carried in the Gaza Strip, due to the lack of material and human capacities.
The training will in total benefit directly 15 patients, along with 10 orthopedic surgeons from the Gaza Strip who will have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge in the field of war and trauma surgery. Orthopedic surgery is the field of surgery that refers to bones. War and trauma surgery mostly focuses on bullet or explosive-related injuries as well as trauma resulting from accidents. Cases of patients suffering from post operatories complications following injuries resulting from last year’s war will count among the surgeries.
Medecins du Monde – France is an international medical organization which relies on the commitment of healthcare professionals to bring relief to the most vulnerable populations. “In Gaza, we aim at reinforcing the medical sector in the Gaza Strip in two specific area : primary and emergency care and orthopedic surgery”, says Medecins du Monde – France.
“One year after the war, this training takes part of a wider program of reinforcement of the medical health care in Gaza. As a result of the ongoing blockade, Gaza’s main hospitals suffer from a lack of spare parts and drugs; and doctors lacks fresh input of ideas and knowledge. Therefore our organization gives a special focus to human capacities building in order to share medical know-how with doctors from Gaza”.
