PARIS, April 22, 2026 (WAFA) – The Executive Board of the UNESCO, during its 224th session, unanimously adopted a resolution on following up the implementation of the organization’s decisions regarding the situation in the Gaza Strip.
The resolution highlights the damage inflicted on hundreds of schools, universities, and heritage sites in Gaza as a result of Israeli attacks, as well as the grave risks faced by journalists and media workers, in a violation of international humanitarian law and UNESCO principles.
Its unanimous adoption reflects growing international recognition of the scale of the humanitarian, cultural, and educational catastrophe affecting the Palestinian people, particularly in Gaza, amid widespread destruction targeting sectors under UNESCO’s mandate.
In his address to the Executive Board, Adel Atieh, Permanent Delegate of Palestine to UNESCO, welcomed the unanimous adoption of the resolution by member states.
He stressed the scale of suffering endured by Palestinians in Gaza as a result of the ongoing war, which he said has led to near-total destruction of daily life, severe damage to the education sector and key heritage sites, and the killing of 264 journalists.
He also underscored the importance of international efforts to alleviate the suffering of people in Gaza, expressing appreciation to countries contributing to the Gaza Fund and to UNESCO’s leadership, headed by Director-General Khaled El-Enany, for their efforts to sustain education, culture, and media through emergency response programs in the territory.
