Working under Fire: Ban Commends UNRWA Workers for Bravery

NEW YORK, June 25, 2009, (WAFA)- UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has sent two UNRWA field officers, Scott Anderson and Jodie Clark, letters of commendation praising their 'prompt and courageous action' during Israel's 22 day offensive in Gaza.

When white phosphorous landed under a fuel truck near UNRWA's Gaza warehouse, Anderson and Clark climbed under the vehicle and moved the explosive material with wood from pallets, preventing considerable destruction and loss of life. Such commendations are only sent under exceptional circumstances to acknowledge action that fulfills 'the highest ideals of international civil service.'

'It was like playing ice hockey,' said Anderson, explaining that he and Clark ripped wooden planks off a nearby pallet to smash the white phosphorous out from under the truck.
