Palestinian CPI Decreases by 0.71% in January 2009

RAMALLAH, February 14, 2009 (WAFA)- The overall Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the Palestinian Territory in January 2009 decreased by 0.71% compared to December 2008, and increased by 5.0% compared to January 2008, a Palestinian Central Bureau Of Statistics (PCBS) indicated.

 

Analysis of consumer price developments for December indicates declines in the following major expenditure groups

 

Housing

- 2.80%

Transportation

- 2.10%

Textiles, clothing and footwear

- 1.05%

Food and soft drinks  

- 0.50%

Medical care

- 0.37%

Recreational, cultural goods & services

- 0.17%

Miscellaneous goods and services

- 0.13%

Restaurants and cafes

- 0.04%

 

At the same time, there were increases in other major expenditure groups. They were as follows:

 

Furniture, household goods

+ 0.78%

Al Coholic Beverages and tobacco

+ 0.70%

Communications

+ 0.08%

 

Palestinian Territory regions experienced different overall CPI developments; CPI in the Gaza Strip increased by 0.15%, while the CPI in the West Bank excluding East Jerusalem decreased by 1.09% and in East Jerusalem, it decreased by 1.17%.
