RAMALLAH, Friday, September 27, 2019 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas’ speech before the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York dominated the front page headlines in Friday’s issue of the three Palestinian dailies.
Abbas was quoted in the three dailies stating: “The Palestinian people will not surrender to the Israeli occupation regardless of the circumstances, ]and no matter the pain, and will remain steadfast on their land,[ resisting occupation by all available means, ]foremost peaceful popular resistance[.”
He was also reported in al-Quds stating: “Let everyone know that occupation cannot bring peace or security or stability for anyone.”
He was also reported berating the US for its Middle East policy and insisting on ending its role as the sole mediator in the Middle East peace process.
He was also reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida renewing his call for convening an international peace conference in line with the initiative he presented before the UN Security Council in February 2018.
He was also reported announcing his intention to set a date for holding general elections in the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem upon his return from this international gathering.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida added that Fatah Central Committee appreciates Abbas’ efforts in confronting the US-touted Mideast plan, dubbed deal of the century, and attachment to the fixed principles.
According to al-Quds and al-Ayyam, Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh announced that the Islamic movement has accepted the initiative of eight Palestinian factions to achieve unity and reconciliation.
The dailies said that Israeli police detained a Palestinian boy after shooting and injuring him at the Chain Gate, which leads to Jerusalem’s flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound.
Al-Quds elaborated that the boy was shot purportedly after carrying out a stabbing attack that left a policewoman injured.
It said that Israeli police imposed tightened measures in the Old City of Jerusalem, while al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that part of the wall surrounding the historic Islamic cemetery of Bab al-Rahma has collapsed due to Israeli excavations.
It also reported that Qatari grant of cash assistance is being disbursed to impoverished families in the besieged Gaza Strip.
According to the dailies, Israeli occupation authorities seized 1,500 dunum of land belonging to the Palestinian town of Dura, south of Hebron.
Al-Quds highlighted the findings of Israeli population census showing that Israel’s population tops 9 million, including 2 million Palestinians.
According to al-Ayyam, a number of Palestinians were injured from Israeli military gunfire during raids into the West Bank districts of Hebron and Ramallah and al-Bireh.
It added that Palestinian prisoners, who have been hunger striking in recent months, ended their strike after the Israeli Prison Service agreed to their demands.
Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida spotlighted Finance Minister Shukri Bishara’s meeting with international donors in New York, pledging to resort to international arbitration.
They reported him saying that the Paris Protocol on Economic Relations is no longer sustainable and it has become inevitable to change it.
Premier Mohammad Shtayyeh was reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida stating that the Palestinian people’s potentials need to be harnessed in order to confront poverty and unemployment.
They said that incumbent Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu faces considerable difficulties or an almost impossible task to form a new government amidst warns of calls for third elections.
They reported Palestinian officials paying tribute to former French president Jacques Chirac, who passed away yesterday at 86, describing him as a “friend of the Palestinian people” and “a symbol of defence of freedom and the principles of justice and equality”.
